I made this discovery by accident one day during the school year. My friend, and co-host on Funniest Thing! with Darrell and Ed, Ed Biagiotti decided to surprise visit our friend Jan Glusac at lunch. Jan is an elementary school teacher in "The Heart of Screenland", Culver City, CA. We dropped by her classroom at lunch time while she was alone. At the end of our visit, Jan asked if I'd draw one of my cartoons on the board before I left. She said to draw whatever I felt inspired to. So I drew my dog Gabby and a bone. Then I had got a hunch to ask her what she would be teaching her kids that afternoon. Jan said, "Geometry." Instantly the thought came into my mind to re-draw Gabby and her bone above the original drawings, only this time broken down into simple shapes. It was one of those divine ideas that originate somewhere beyond my thinking. I know this because I had never considered the simple shapes that formed Gabby or her bone before. Jan was ecstatic and asked Ed and I if we would be able to stick around until her class arrived, so they could meet us. I'm glad we did. We all learned that geometry is a lot of fun, when you use it to draw cartoons. Here is the results, below is a gallery of the student's work done in class that day.
I'm still amazed at how the decision to surprise a friend at work, (and the willingness to draw a cartoon of my dog for her), blossomed into an unexpected lesson and fun-filled afternoon for everyone.
