Nice surprises

Getting a letter or postcard in the mail is a nice surprise.  Sending a short note or postcard to someone I'm thinking about makes me happy.  I've learned to give myself permission to keep them short and to the point.  Brief and from the heart keeps letter writing fun.

Right after I got off the phone with my brother Eric, I was thinking about our mother.  When inspiration strikes, I like to strike out by using whatever is handy.  Digging through my briefcase for a scrap of paper I found this leftover thank you card.  Perfect!

A funny thing happened
while I was writing this short note to my mother.  I was sitting at a table in a coffee shop and a woman who had read my new book What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug? rushed over, excused herself and began to thank me.  She told me how much the stories of love, faith and forgiveness have meant to her over the past few days.  Her father suffered a major heart attack.  Throughout the ordeal of rushing him to the hospital and then while in the waiting room during his procedure, the words, 'inch by inch' kept going through her head.  She continued to share how the chapter she was referring to, "I grew and inch when I quit art school and joined the Coast Guard," had helped her to remain calm moment by moment in spite of her fear and her frazzled family members.  Then she told me how the chapter, "My rotten mother was the perfect mom", helped her see the often strained relationship between her and her mom from a higher perspective.  Flattered, I thanked her and then I showed her that I just finished writing a short love note to MY mother.   She smiled, thanked me for the inspiration, and before she left we hugged.

If it seems unreasonable, do it!

My recent book signing at Pauline Books and Media in Culver City, CA turned out to be a tremendous success, 85 enthusiastic new friends walked away with  signed copies of my new book, "What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug?"  The following week I was contacted by two of these former strangers through the bookstore.  They each felt compelled to tell me how much they were enjoying the book.  One saying, "I'm only half way through and I've been laughing and crying, thank you so much!", the other to tell me "I appreciate how simple and to the point you share spiritual concepts.  I would like to buy three more copies as gifts.  Would you be able to sign them?"  I agreed and met her at the bookstore.  While I signed each copy she enthusiastically shared some of her personal 'me too!' experiences that were similar some of my stories in the book.  To think that I almost said no to this opportunity seems insane.

Just a little over a month prior to the signing I was thrilled to be holding the first copy of "What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug?" in my hands.  It turned out better than expected.  I couldn't wait to share it with my friends, the Daughters of St. Paul at Pauline Books and Media, especially since Sister Rose Pacatte, Hollywood's movie reviewing nun, wrote a recommendation that's on the back of the book.  In the mist of the compliments as the book got passed around one of the Sisters suggested I do a book signing at their store.  Really?  It seemed unreasonable.  Have my book signing at a Catholic bookstore run my nuns?  What would people think?  My mind began to suggest more 'adequate' venues.  Then I snapped out of my trance and spoke, "Really, we can do it here?  That would be great.  This is the perfect place to have it!"  With that being said we set the date.  Thank God I've learned to not let reason slip me a roofie.

"God's plan for each man transcends the limitation of the reasoning mind, and is always the square of life, containing health, wealth, love and perfect self-expression.  All power is given man (through right thinking) to bring his heaven upon his earth, and this is the goal of the "Game of Life."  The simple rules are fearless faith, nonresistance and love!  –Florence Scovel Shinn

So, if it seems unreasonable, do it.

I almost forgot to mention this.  Such a success was the book signing that an author who attended, impressed by the crowd lined up for copies of "What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug?" and the party atmosphere, inquired and scheduled a date for his book signing at Pauline Books & Media too.

If you'd like to purchase your very own personally signed copy of "What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug?" as a gift or for yourself I'd love to make that happen.  So I've made it simple: click here.

Enjoy a 'Should Free' New Year!

While the crew at Unity Online Radio have been enjoying the holidays, Ed and I have been suffering withdrawals so we broke into Middle School Studios and recorded a short video version of our weekly Unity Online Radio program Funniest Thing! with Darrell and Ed encouraging our listeners to join us in starting the New Year 'should free.'  We begin by getting rid of all our old books that we've been reluctant to let go of because we feel that we 'should' read them.  Our motto is: a should read is NOT a good read, so out it goes!
